MONICA M. SERNETT

POCAHONTAS — Monica M. Sernett, age 89, of Pocahontas, passed away Monday, May 5, 2008, at the Rolfe Care Center in Rolfe, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, May 9, at the Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church in Pocahontas, Iowa, with Msgr. Michael Sernett and Fr. Merle Kollasch officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Pocahontas, Iowa. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at the Powers Funeral Home in Pocahontas. There will be a rosary at 5 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., both Thursday at the funeral home.

Monica Marie Hronek was born Sept. 16, 1918, near Rolfe, Iowa. She was the daughter of Frank and Marie (Nedved) Hronek. She attended country school and graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1936. On Sept. 12, 1938, Monica married Robert Sernett at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Rolfe. The couple settled on the family farm near Pocahontas. They retired in 1979 and moved into Pocahontas in 1989. In January of 2004, they entered the Rolfe Care Center. Robert passed away in August of 2006.

Monica was a member of the Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church, Catholic Ladies Society and the Catholic Order of Foresters. She especially enjoyed baking.

Survivors include her children, Marilyn (Dennis) Jackson of Naples, Fla., Msgr. Michael Sernett of Graettinger, Elaine Colee of Pocahontas and Diane (Donald) Spitzley of Detroit Lakes, Minn.; 18 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

Monica was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; a son, Charles; and sisters, Sadie Hudek and Charlene Baughman.
