Fascinating Microfilm Reading at the Public Library

The Rolfe Arrow
— August 21, 1975

Marion, the Librarian, has had a little bit in her column about the library’s microfilm reader. All of the past issues of the Rolfe Arrow and preceding Rolfe papers are there on microfilm for you to view if you wish. We think there should be a little more traffic in that department, because a wealth of nostalgia and factual information is there.

Friday I viewed the reel of film that covered the period from May 1907 to July 1910. Here are a few items:

May 16, ’07: "Wheat shot up past $1.00 in the most sensational opening in history."

October 10, ’07: Dedication of the Rolfe Presbyterian Church.

October 31, ’07: Announcement of a railroad from Fort Dodge through Clare, Pocahontas, Havelock, Mallard, Emmetsburg and Spirit Lake. (That one apparently died before it came about.)

March 4, ’09: Local citizen sues Rolfe people because daughter went to South Dakota instead of returning home.

May 13, ’09: Rolfe beat Humboldt in baseball 9-4. Line up: Johnson, Boyce, L. Butler, G. Butler, Gunderson, Thompson, Lighter, Kent, Taylor, Smith - familiar names? Ah, yes.

May 27, ’09: A well known traveling salesman from Manchester and the handsome and dashing lady assistant at the millinery store have been arrested in the city on a warrant issued by the man’s wife.

October 21, ’09: Rolfe High beat Fort Dodge High 11-6. The visitors outweighed us 25-30 lbs., but Rolfe’s backfield plowed through the Fort Dodge line as only farmers can plow. It was a victory the High School rooters will talk about and feel good over for days to come.

October 28, ’09: Dynamite sticks with caps found in oat bundles at Bendixen threshing site.

January 13, ’10: Exchange Bank of Pocahontas failed. Assets, $14,000, liabilities, $44,000.

March 17, ’10: Rolfe to have new Methodist Church.

June 2, ’10: The valedictorian gave an oration, "Instrumental Development In The U.S."
