Donald Onnen

The following is an obit we received for Donald Onnen.

Donald Wayne Onnen died peacefully at home during the afternoon of December 24, 2005 at the age of 68.  He was born August 24, 1937 in Rolfe, Iowa to George and Arna Onnen.

Don graduated from St. Olaf College for Ministries in Minnesota and then moved to Houston, Texas.  He met Ruby Harris at a local cafe and married her three months later.  They have been happily married for 49 years.  He devoted 46 years of dedication working at the Lighthouse of Houston for the blind, only missing one week of work due to illness during his employment there.  He enjoyed working, fishing, spending time with family, helping the kids with their homework, bowling and loving his wife and numerous cats.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Onnen; his sons, David and Donald Onnen, Jr.; daughter, Barbara Cox-DeRosa; brothers, Ellis and Gene, Onnen; a sister, Mary Eger; 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and many beloved nephews, nieces and co-workers.

A few of us ever have the privilege of encountering someone who stands out above all others, and Don was such a man.  He was extremely respected and was loved by everyone, always setting an example of total dedication in all areas of his life, marriage, family  and job.  Over the years Don and Ruby have opened their hearts and to anyone in need.  He greatly influenced and inspired everyone and will be deeply missed.  We have comfort in the knowledge that he has been reunited with his loving, wonderful mother up in Heaven. God called home one of his brightest stars.
